In 2025, businesses not only have the responsibility to have a positive impact on society but also to be able to track their progress throughout the years of running their business. As we all know, saying you are doing something is not always the same as actually doing it. Businesses have the responsibility to track the social impact of their CSR to be able to provide customers with clear evidence of their work and projections for the future.
In my time working as the Operations Coordinator at Crossfit Central/Waterloo Pickleball, I noticed an event that took place each month that has changed my perspective on running a business forever. Every month, they would choose an “Athlete of the Month,” this was a gym member that every trainer, manager, and even interns chose that displayed the characteristics of a well-rounded athlete. This athlete would take the time to include other athletes that may have felt left out, check in on the trainers, and even volunteer at certain events hosted by our gym. The monthly award was given out to commemorate the hard work of the athlete and celebrate their desire to strengthen the community at Crossfit Central.

As a result of this reward being given out, the data of how much money the athlete helped earn at events, how many new athletes attended the gym because of them, and how many hours they spent growing the community at the gym was collected and detailed under the athlete’s online profile. Crossfit Central was then able to detail how driven its community was year by year and help plan for the future. Through this monthly award, Crossfit Central showed its focus on building a community and used the reward to inspire its athletes to go above and beyond for one another.

This action by Crossfit Central not only strengthened its community but also set an example in my mind for other businesses in our society. The majority of the time, we see businesses say they’re prioritizing their employees and the community around them but have no proof to back the statement up. Through Crossfit Central’s monthly program, it was able to strengthen its internal and external communities and provide data under each athlete’s name for users to analyze online. To conclude, businesses need to prioritize finding ways to detail their progress in helping their communities and society as a whole. If a business can have a strong foundation or programs showcasing its desire to have a positive impact on society, its employees are more likely to stay with the company longer and want to continue to grow the community around the company.
